Synopsis
The world around us is three dimensional. However, light can be recognised as an independent, fourth dimension of architecture. This seminar covers the perception-oriented lighting philosophy of American architect and lighting designer Richard Kelly (1910-1977), the pioneer of qualitative lighting design, who replaced the question of lighting quantity with the question of individual quantities of light. These were designed according to a series of lighting functions, which were in turn geared towards the perceiving observer.
In this talk, we will discuss its implications on the design process and a demonstration of its use as a simple communication tool. It will also cover recent developments in lighting technology, with a focus on how to provide the optimum balance between efficiency and visual comfort, and allow you to feel how different lighting effects can influence user experience and the perception of interior spaces in a flexible and interactive workshop.
