Synopsis
The webinars will feature the sharing of the design philosophies and concept by the winning designs of the 19th SIA Architectural Design Awards 2020.
Project 1: Project #13
This interior project rethinks the approach of repurposing a HDB unit that was built in 1980s, as a home office. The re-design begins at the entrance foyer that opens out to the public corridor and encourages interaction with neighbours on the same floor. Inside, existing false ceilings were removed, exposing high double volume space where resting platforms are inserted and thereby providing opportunities for inter-sectional relationships from above looking down via a concealed window. Internal rooms and partitions are expressed as clean timber volumes cleverly containing different functions with a consistent, minimalist language. The result is well-designed interiors that are bright, airy and delightful. The architect has proven cosharing, flexible use and future proofing of a small space can be designed for.
Speaker: Kho Keguang, STUDIO WILLS + Architects

STUDIO WILLS + Architects is an architectural studio of environment & experience design with a focus in making a better environment by discovering the potentials of present conditions; The aspiration to enhance the environment brings an approach of searching the extraordinary in the ordinary everyday life.
Project 2: Tzu Chi Humanistic Youth Centre
Tzu Chi Humanistic Youth Centre services youth programs that advocate recycling, up-cycling and responsible living. The juror commended the designers for their ingenious revamp of what was formerly a single-storey polyclinic. The interior design encourages a behavioural shift upon entering and users are often quietened to a calmness in this space. The designers have demonstrated their ability to execute, with a single material and colour, a consistent and skillful interior that is at once engaging yet comfortable. Overall, the interior has successfully aligned with the global NGO’s branding and image to achieve a sense of place.
Speaker: Julian Chia, Kyoob Architects Pte Ltd
Julian is a co-founder of KYOOB, established since 2003. Julian has been in practise for more than 20 years & leads the design, research & information technology teams at KYOOB. In addition to his passion for design, Julian enjoys photography and listening to a wide genre of music.
Project 3: Aesop 1 Utama
Aesop 1 Utama is a store design in a mall for an international brand that has a focus on design and place-specificity while retaining a strong unique brand spirit. The jury enjoyed how the designers had worked with a singular vernacular material; corrugated tin, in a myriad of different ways throughout the interior, to achieve a striking design. Through a variety of design and construction methods with one material, the jury commended the designers’ rigorous process and their efforts in being able to achieve many ways of seeing, in a sophisticated and refined retail interior.
Speaker: Tiah Nan Chyuan, FARM Architects Pte. Ltd.
Nan Chyuan is a Director at FARM, a cross disciplinary design practice that won the President’s Design Award Design of the Year in 2010 and was featured in Wallpaper’s Architects’ Directory 2018. Beyond practice, Nan Chyuan is an active design advocate, having served as Co-curator of iLight Marina Bay 2012, Jury Member for Pasir Panjang Ideas Competition by URA.

Project 4: The Quiet Room
The main challenge of the brief for this space was to design an interior that could influence the behavioural and emotional state of its users. For crafting a well thought through design that could meet this brief, the Jury commends the designers for this small but sensitive project that demonstrates a deep understanding of what is required. From the process of investigation and research, to the innovative design and integration of form, texture and light, the simple interior has a calming effect for all users, not just for children. The ability to impact behaviour through design is achieved here through a well-executed architectural space.
Speaker: Ong Ker-Shing, Lekker Architects
Ong Ker-Shing is an architect, landscape architect, and educator. She is currently the Programme Director for the BA Arch degree at NUS DOA whilst running Lekker Architects. She was selected as one of URA’s 20 under 45 (Third Edition), and with Lekker, won a PDA for Design of the Year (2015).
Project 5: A Midsummer Night’s Dream Stage Set
The Jury commends the designers for successfully applying an architectural approach to stage set design to widen the agency of architecture. To fulfil conditions such as an expedited overnight set-up, speedy scene changes and structural loading of the cast, the designers were able to build flexibility into an abstract composition of white volumes that met physical demands as well as lent the stage to artistic interpretation. With a series of ramps and landings aided by thoughtful use of lighting, the stage was meaningfully utilised for stage set scene changes where the architectural volumes engaged with light, playing with sense of depth and perspectives, and allowed for a myriad of different configurations, that were creative and useful for the performance.
