Over the decades, metal roof has become somewhat vernacular in our construction language while still innovating through our design processes today, weathering through our tropical climate.
This talk shines a light on such design innovation in the form of case studies that steel metal roofing – despite the evolving trends – remains not only necessary, but relevant. It will cover aspects of sustainable design approaches that is characterized by sensitivity to the spaces & places, in the context and culture of the regional housing industry, particularly in Singapore & Malaysia.
We will also look into how the aesthetics of steel metal roofing fosters a bond with nature and the community at large.
And lastly, we will look into the industry’s aim in achieving lower zero carbon footprint and the vast potential it represents; reminiscing the past of metal steel roof designs and innovations for the future.

Embarking On Sustainability – The Green Roof

Green roofs have contributed numerous environmental benefits to improve our living habitat in urban cities. Through the years, many types of green roof systems were developed to suit different types of roof surfaces, both concrete and steel roofs in various forms and sizes.
A joint collaboration with renowed metal roofing specialist NS BlueScope Lysaght Singapore and leading urban greenery specialist Uniseal, provide an integrated ecological solution to achieve a greener skyline in cities and visual reliefs from the urban environment. The state-of-the art green roof enhances biophilic architectural designs and public spaces, creating iconic landmarks in the city that provide therapeutic effect to city dwellers.
The presentation explains the different types of green roof system to enable designers understand the options and creativity potential that can be converged in their masterpiece.

Alan Tan is the Director (Technical & Specification) of Uniseal. He is passionate about aesthetic designs, urban greenery and green architecture. He is one of the veterans of green roof and green wall market proliferation in Singapore, and has researched and developed sustainable system for green roofs and vertical green walls, in collaboration with industry partners.
