Synopsis
Natural stone is a wonderful product, used for thousands of years … in a certain way: blocks, thick pieces, made-to- measure products. The current way of use is much more demanding, large formats with more and more reduced thickness. Then the technical limitations are visible: reduced benefits to flexion, fragility, variation of properties due to their natural character.
Can you improve the stone, maintaining its natural personality? Yes … to a certain extent.A specific property can be improved, for example surface porosity, either by temporary chemical treatments (top-pore sealants), or by advanced technology that changes the surface tension of the material and is permanent. But in these cases, a granite is not the same as a marble. The granulometric characteristics limit these possibilities.
Engineered stones are born as a response and overcoming the limits of natural stones. Starting from a better use of raw materials (minerals and aggregates of small size instead of large blocks) and resorting to different technologies to agglomerate or transform them, these products can be manufactured in formats over 4 m2 and thicknesses in a range between 3 cm and 4 mm, preserving physical-mechanical properties unthinkable 50 years ago.
The creative possibilities are infinitely greater today, but not everything is acceptable. The environment (both on a global / planetary scale and in the local environment or a factory) is at stake. There are already units of measurement to assess the environmental impact and therefore we must become aware and demand real sustainability, measure, compare and know how to choose.
In this seminar we will show what is possible with these materials, what is the sustainable value chain and how to measure the environmental impacts related to the carbon footprint, water circularity and the responsible use of energy.
