Synopsis
Computational Design is as simple as tapping into the ability of computers to calculate and perform multiple complicated tasks simultaneously. The AEC industry has moved successfully from hand drafting to CAD to BIM. However, Computational design remains a largely unexplored territory for most architects and building engineers, who have different strengths and may not have the time or inclination to learn how to code. Computational design tools deliver the power of these processes with visual programming. It involves a shift in design thinking and methods. Almost advancing from drawing geometry to generating geometry through designer-authored computational processes. It can be used not just for complex geometry, but also for simplifying day to day processes, freeing up more drawing time of the designers to explore, assess and optimize the generated designs for better performance.
Different ways Computational Design can influence the way buildings are designed
- Explore multiple design options – through parameters and constraints, defining relationship rules between the different AEC elements.
- Automate repetitive tasks
- incorporating computational design tools makes it easier to test variations at the design stage itself and testing the performance of the design and further modifying it to optimize desired performance
- Think algorithmically
In computational design, the program is assembled graphically rather than in blocks of code.
This session will demonstrate the use of Computational Design using the BIM tool, OpenBuildings Designer and its companion application, GenerativeComponents, to recreate some iconic building facades and creating custom nodes and scripts that can be reused in other projects. The speakers will also demonstrate features of parametric modeling within the same platform.

Speakers
JinLing Yeo
Building Design Consultant Virtuosity, A Bentley Company
JinLing, Yeo is a Consultant for OpenBuildings Designer in Bentley Systems, since June 2018. She is specialized in OpenBuildings Designer Computational Design (GenerativeComponents). Since then, she has conducted numerous OpenBuildings Designer trainings and provided Professional Services to users locally and internationally.
Alyn Sujai
Associate Consultant, Facilities Engineering, Bentley Systems
Alyn Sujai began her stint with Bentley in 2018. Involved in OpenBuildings Designer dataset creation and modelling, she has been exposed to a multitude of cross disciplinary projects ranging from medium sized to mega projects in not only Singapore, but also abroad. She has been providing technical support to the team and conducts live and online training for OpenBuildings Designer. She is motivated to help users understand the basics of OpenBuildings Designer and subsequently to capitalise on that knowledge to further advance their skills within their industry.
