Synopsis

In part one of our “Illuminating Architecture” series, we explored the language of light and the human-centered approach to lighting design. Now, we delve into illuminating large-volume spaces.

These expansive environments, common in today’s urban landscape, are designed to evoke a sense of grandeur, as seen in office lobbies, airports, and train stations. However, a misconception persists: that achieving this grandeur requires an abundance of powerful luminaires.

This session challenges that notion. We’ll explore how to illuminate large volume spaces effectively without resorting to a light-flooded environment. Our goal is to create a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere while prioritizing sustainability through energy-efficient and effective lighting solutions.

Case Study:

Changi Airport

Following its recent revamp, Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 offers a compelling case study in sustainable lighting practices in large volume spaces. This session will delve into the specific industry codes that determine minimum lux levels (illumination levels) and explore how these translate to the actual number of lumens (light output) used in the terminal.  We’ll analyse the energy savings achieved through this approach and explore the key differences between prioritizing lux per watt (efficiency) versus lumens per watt (efficacy).  By examining the theory behind both efficient and effective lighting, this session will reveal how Changi Airport Terminal 2 achieved a well-lit, comfortable environment while minimizing its environmental impact.

CapitaSpring

As a testament to sustainable design, CapitaSpring, the award-winning mixed-use development by Bjarke Ingels Group and Carlo Ratti, stands tall in Singapore.  This impressive structure boasts a soaring 21-meter main lobby, which serves as a fascinating case study for lighting design. Here, we’ll explore how lighting principles can be harnessed to achieve optimal efficiency and effectiveness within this grand volume.  By focusing on various lighting design principals, the goal is to create a welcoming and comfortable environment while prioritizing sustainability and minimizing the number of luminaires required.  CapitaSpring, recognized with one of the highest accolades in Singapore for its sustainable practices, offers a perfect opportunity to showcase how lighting principles can seamlessly integrate with an environmentally friendly approach in a large volume space.
