Synopsis

Many in the architecture fraternity are still new to the concept of Public Engagement and its role within a project. This conversation reveals the importance of Public Engagement, projects that lend itself to include community input and how the collated findings inform the decision-making processes. The speakers will delve into different methodologies customised for projects of different scales and types.


Speakers

Dr. Tan Beng Kiang, NUS
Associate Professor, Department of Architecture, College of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore

Beng Kiang is an educator, registered architect and a former SIA council member. She leads community design studios and service learning projects in Singapore and ASEAN. The projects have been exhibited in Archifest and Design for the Common Good International Exhibition. Her teaching and research interests are in Participatory Community Design & Planning, Aging and Housing. She is a recipient of numerous teaching and design awards, including the Pacific Rim Award for Excellence in Public Interest Design 2018 for Smile Village project.

Dr. Chong Keng Hua, SUTD
Associate Professor of Architecture and Sustainable Design, Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD)

Keng Hua directs the Social Urban Lab (SOULab) and co-leads the Opportunity Lab (O-Lab). He is also Founding Partner of COLOURS: Collectively Ours, an award-winning design consultancy specializing in public space and social impact.
A firm believer in design activism, Dr. Chong has been advocating social architecture and community design in the region. His research on ageing, health and data-driven collaborative design has led to 2 books - Second Beginnings (finalist for Singapore President’s Design Award 2020) and Creative Ageing Cities (Cities of Love Award 2018), as well as several design interventions, including TOUCHpoint @ AMK 433 (APAC Eldercare Innovation Silver Architecture Award 2019) and the recent Common Good Pavilion at SIA Archifest 2022. He was Curator of Singapore Pavilion for Seoul Biennale 2017, Venice Biennale 2018, and Festival Director of SIA Archifest 2020.

Mr. Larry Yeung, P!D
Executive Director, Participate in Design (P!D)

Larry is a designer and community organiser who is a strong advocate for participatory and community-centric design in Singapore. He leads Participate in Design (P!D), a non-profit design organisation that helps neighbourhoods and public institutions design community-owned spaces and solutions. Since graduating from the National University of Singapore with a M. Arch, Larry’s portfolio of participatory-based projects includes neighbourhood planning, public space design, and community art installations. Larry has also been recognised as a World Cities Summit Young Leader in 2021, honouring him as one of the change-makers shaping the global urban agenda and a recipient of the BCA-CPG Industrial scholarship and the URA Urban Design prize in 2014. Larry is also a part of CSC-MCCY’s Partnerships and Engagement Experts Panel since November 2022, consulting with public agencies in Singapore on their citizen & stakeholder engagement projects.

Ar. Chua Ping Yit, GUI
Ground-Up Initiative (GUI), SIA CSR Committee Member

Starting off as a volunteer in 2011, Ping Yit is now in charge of GUI. Being an architect by training, he played a big part in building Kampung Kampus and the GUI Headquarters. He is also a highly driven and creative problem solver, who supports GUI in all her strategic planning and operational matters. Ping Yit is a firm believer in learning by doing, getting his hands dirty and being grounded in everything he does. His work with GUI is a testament to his beliefs and commitment to a better future for the next generations.
