Synopsis
Coatings can do so much more than just protect and beautify. Steel loses strength at elevated temperatures. Using passive fire protection limits temperature rise in steel in order to prevent structures losing stability in the event of a fire, providing additional time for emergency response and safe evacuation of the building as well as minimising damage to assets.
Part 1 – Fundamentals of passive fire protection
This presentation will cover the fundamentals of cellulosic passive fire protection, including why and how we protect steel structures from fire. The seminar will then discuss how thicknesses of intumescent coatings can be calculated based on engineering principles and highlight the project benefits.
Part 2 – Design consideration of passive fire protection
As a building designer it is important to understand how the use of intumescent coating is effected by other design elements. We will address question such as the following:
• How much space due I need to allow for the expansion of the coating,
• How does slab decking type effect the thickness of the coating?, or
• Have I allowed for coat backs?
Being aware of these considerations can prevent project issues, delays and related costs.
Speakers
Erik van Schaijk
BSc
Sr Subject Matter Expert (SME) – Passive Fire Protection
A BSc in Chemical Engineering. He started in the Protective Coatings industry 26 years ago. After gaining experience of all types of Protective Coatings he specialised since 2002 into the field of Passive Fire Protection. His expertise lies in formulation development, testing and certification of intumescent coating systems, with a global scope. Day to day he provides technical advice and training on the correct use of PFP and obtains and maintains PFP approvals and certificates for Hempel’s intumescent products.
