Synopsis
Datuk Seri Lim will speak about when SIA in collaboration with PAM helped to establish the CAA and to activate the Asian regional institutes towards realising national ideals, integrity, standards and capacity in Architectural Educational and Practice – free from Imperilistic dominance, and also about the controversial saga of happenings within the CAA. How this lead to an expanded regional alliance within Asean and Asia. He will offer candid views pertain to experiences up to 1999, but may indulge in his belief that the profession has to undergo a radical revolution in the face of crass commercialism and the seriously deteriorating environment not to mention the continuing failures in urban planning and development control.
About ARCASIA
Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA) consists of 21 member institutes within Asia. The Council of the ARCASIA consists of all the Presidents of the National Institutes, and the organization itself serves as an extension for each member institutes’ regional programme and relations.
Annual meetings are held in different member institute countries, to deliberate and to give collective directions and representation to matters that affect the architectural profession in the Asian region.
Objectives of ARCASIA:
• to unite National Institutes of Architects on a democratic basis throughout the Asian region, to foster friendly, intellectual, artistic, educational and scientific ties;
• to foster and maintain professional contacts, mutual co-operation and assistance among member institutes;
• to represent architects of the member institutes at national and international levels;
• to promote the recognition of the architect’s role in society;
• to promote the development and education of architects and the architectural profession in their service to society;
• to promote research and technical advancement in the field of the built environment.
About CAA
The Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) is a membership organisation for professional bodies representing architects in Commonwealth countries.
CAA’s constitution sets the aim of the organisation as ‘The advancement of Architecture throughout the Commonwealth, and the acquisition of knowledge of the various arts and sciences connected therewith’.
CAA aims to promote co-operation between members and other equivalent organisations to ensure the maximum contribution of architects to the wellbeing of society as well as encouraging activities on a regional basis

Datuk Seri Lim Chong Keat
Datuk Seri Lim Chong Keat was the Founder Chairman of ARCASIA (1969–1974) as well as the Chairman of the CAA Board of Architectural Education (1977-1981)
Datuk Seri Lim was the third President of the SIA, and is a Gold Medalist of both PAM and SIA. In 1949, he the pioneer batch at the University of Malaya in Singapore studying science on a Federal Scholarship, a contemporary of Wang Gungwu. He graduated from the University of Manchester, and MIT where he studied with Gyorgy Kepes in Visual Design, and Robert Newman in Acoustics. He was acquainted with Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius (and the Bauhaus) - and with Richard Buckminster Fuller.
He has served on the Housing & Development Board, and other public bodies, also as a member of the UN panel for State & City Planning, and as Honoray Director of the SEAsia Cultural Research Programme on Folk Architecture at ISEAS.
His body of work under his firms Malayan Architects Co-partnership and Architects Team Three includes the Singapore Conference Hall, the Jurong Town Hall, the UOB and the DBS Buildings - and Komtar Building and its Geodesic Dome in Penang, also the Bank of Ceylon HQ in Colombo.
Besides his architectural accomplishments, Datuk Seri Lim is also noted for the range of his interests and capabilities,a true polymath. His contributions to Singapore Art through his Alpha Gallery must be remembered. A true renaissance man, his interest goes beyond the architectural domain and includes art, music, ethnography and botany.

- For SIA Members whose registrations have been confirmed, attendance is compulsory. Cancellation for complimentary registration is only allowed 3 working days before the actual event.
- Any absentee will be charged at $20.00.
- Ticket is non-transferable under all circumstances.
