Topic 1
Integrating Systems in 21st Century Urbanism: A Sustainable Approach by Ar. Wong Mun Summ
The 21st century presents a unique set of challenges that set it apart from the 20th century. Global warming, exponential population growth, limited space, and dwindling natural resources are some of the pressing issues we confront today. In response to these challenges, traditional approaches to city planning and urban design are evolving. This lecture, led by WOHA Founding Director Wong Mun Summ, delves into the imperative need for architecture and urban design to embrace a holistic approach that integrates multiple systems: green/blue, energy and food, to meet the demands of the 21st century.
Wong Mun Summ will explore how our cities and urban environments can no longer afford to rely on mono-use land parcels and standalone buildings and developments. Instead, he will advocate for the integration of diverse systems that work in harmony to create sustainable, resilient and thriving urban spaces.
Topic 2
The Urban Equaliser: Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) by Ar. Ng Choon Meng Patrik
Cities have transformed from modest mono-functional satellite cities to complex mixed-use districts in mega cities. As social beings, there is an innate inclination to interact, integrate and connect. Patrik shall discuss how Transit-Oriented Developments (TODs) integrate the element of “connect” into the live-work-play environment to weave an intricate network of connections between mixed-use developments.
Bridging across multiple urban scales right to the doorsteps of homes, TODs are sustainable and inclusive urban equalisers. They connect people to learning, working and recreational opportunities, regardless of age and socioeconomic background. TODs are crucial nodes bringing communities together and enhancing the resilience of a city’s social fabric – the key to an endearing city.
