Synopsis

Synopsis:

Natural construction in the tropics embodies the art of harmoniously blending human habitats with the lush and dynamic ecosystems of tropical regions. This architectural approach capitalizes on locally sourced, sustainable materials and techniques that take into account the unique challenges posed by the tropical climate, such as intense heat, heavy rainfall, and humidity. Characterized by open-air designs, effective ventilation, and minimal environmental impact, tropical natural construction not only creates functional and comfortable spaces that coexist with the natural surroundings, but also reflects a deep understanding and respect for the delicate balance between human needs and the rich biodiversity of our region. The principles from these sustainable, traditional construction methods can inform present day projects at every scale.

Speakers

Mr Effan Adhiwira, Eff Studio (Bali)
Eff established Eff Studio and initiated Bamboo Notion, based in Bali in 2011. Eff Studio key mission is to be responsible to the environment while providing creative and ergonomic spaces for the building users. They have decided to be optimal in this aspect by choosing to work with ethical building materials such as bamboo, reclaimed wood, earth and stones that are locally-sourced and ecologically-conscious. With the selected materials as the starting point, Eff Studio generates design ideas that are inspired by nature, socio-culture and human movement. This allows them to transform these materials into buildings that embody both beauty and functional entity. As designers, they believe that the future design will have to be more responsibly blended with the surrounding environment as part of nature.

Ms Tan Chia Chia, Founding Member of Ground-Up Initiative (GUI)
Chia Chia loves playing with mud. Her connections with natural materials and building with earth span two decades, crossing various seasons of her life. What started from turning mounds of earth as a farmer in the semi-deserts of Arizona led on to her explorations with the material in her architectural projects, non-profit volunteer work as well as academic research.
Professionally trained in Architecture, Chia Chia’s interests in designing for sustainable environments, permaculture and building with natural materials led her to work with local communities in Singapore as well as South-east Asia eg. Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia and Bangladesh on post-disaster rebuilding, low-income housing, rainwater harvesting and permacultural projects that aim to meet the ideals of circular economies while sustaining livelihoods.
2023 marks Chia Chia’s 20th year of awakening to the beauty and magic of building with earth and communities. Chia Chia will be sharing in a nutshell her key learnings and reflections, the triumphs, inconvenient truths, follies and nuances working with multiple stakeholders from the ground up across cultures and disciplines.

Ar. Trecia Lim, WeCreate Studio, SIA-CSR Co-Chair
An impacts advocator, an educator and the principal architect at WeCreate Studio, Trecia Lim believes that design goes beyond the aesthetics and that a thoughtful and sensible design process can address many critical global social needs. In 2017, armed with this awareness and philosophy, she embarked on the journey to use architecture as a tool to improve lives. In 2019, Trecia Lim started WeCreate Studio to cement this journey and to show that doing good can be a meaningful consultancy business. WeCreate Studio is a social enterprise that aims to use its architectural and development resources to create social impact by working with less privileged and local communities with limited resources directly.
