Synopsis
Synopsis:
Architects from Singapore are venturing regionally and globally to champion social projects of different scales. These projects range from building of latrines to provide basic sanitation to rural communities to the deployment of bomb-resistant housing in war-torn Ukraine. These inspiring architects give a new definition to architecture heroes where the social needs take precedent above all else.

Ar Chu Yang Keng, IX Architects
Chu Yang Keng is the founder of IX Architects Pte Ltd and a registered ASEAN Architect with projects in the region. Since inception of his professional practice in 2004, Chu has built a diverse portfolio and gained recognition on international grounds with the latest awards won in Barcelona, Spain. Besides, he has served on the SIA SMAP committee and was appointed by the BOA Singapore to be on the panel of examiners.
Chu has a strong interest in nature-centric designs that emphasize on the interconnected relationship between the natural and built environments. His designs strive to achieve harmonious, sustainable spaces that enrich and enliven the quality of living.
Ar. Mak Yiing Huey, IX Architects Pte Ltd
Ar. Mak Yiing Huey is a registered architect and Green Mark accredited professional in Singapore and an Associate with IX Architects Pte Ltd. Yiing Huey believes that an architectural work can reflect the aspirations of the client beyond the immediate function and exude aesthetic timelessness while being adaptable to future needs. The spatial design can be simple yet speak volumes, materials prudent yet astounding. Her recent works include several institutional projects in Cambodia and a social service centre in Singapore, amongst others.
Yiing Huey firmly believes that it is imperative for architects to give back to society and make a real difference in people’s lives through the work that they do.
Mr Jack Sim, World Toilet Organization
Founder of World Toilet Organization and Restroom Association (Singapore)
He is actively involved in toilet activism, public education and media communications. He also organizes local and international events, set standards, researches best practices, shares global information and helps to set up new toilet non-government organizations. In addition, he plays an instrumental role in establishing World Toilet College as well as developing the toilet star-rating system in Singapore.
Ar. Lim Chu Hwai, Epic Homes
Chu Hwai is deeply committed to improving the lives of others through design. He has been spending time outside work designing and building houses for the needy communities in rural areas of Southeast Asia, as well as other community service projects focusing on improving the living environment and welfare of migrant workers community, on a pro bono basis.
Mr John-Son Oei, Epic Collective
John-Son Oei is the Founder and Group CEO of Epic Collective. Established in 2010, Epic inspires, mobilises and empowers individuals to live extraordinary lives dedicated to creating a positive impact around them. Epic has been proudly involved in community development projects around the region, while also establishing themselves as consultants to organisations from multiple sectors, including the Malaysian government and most recently the Obama Foundation. John-Son’s work has also won him recognition and awards; amongst which include being accepted into the prestigious Ashoka Fellowship, The Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award for Dedication 2017, being listed in Forbes 30 under 30 2016, and SME Malaysian Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2017. John-Son also served on the Board of Directors of Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC) from 2019-2021.
Ar. Rudy Taslim, Genesis Architects
Rudy studied Architecture in Singapore and Australia. He graduated top of his cohort and was conferred Valedictorian in 2008.
As Managing Director, Rudy leads project teams for both architectural and interior design projects in Singapore and beyond. His practical tenacity and attention to detail also make him a natural leader in the areas of design and project management.
Rudy is an advocate of architectural excellence and education and spends his time educating and mentoring the next generation of design professionals. He is an Adjunct Lecturer at the Singapore Polytechnic, and Visiting Lecturer at the School of Architecture and Built Environment (SABE) in Rwanda.
