Synopsis

#1: Introduction to SIACSR

Many of us are unaware that SIA had a Corporate Social Responsibility arm looks into creating greater awareness of the institute as well as the institute’s commitment to rally its members and non members alike to work towards a common good in society.

This year, in line with SIA60’s celebrations, we are happy to officially launch our new committee and bring you through the initiatives and activities that we have in store for this year in a bid to make SIA a more inclusive and loving organisation.

Committee members of SIA Corporate Social Responsibility:

#2: The making of the Social Project by Ar. Ong Ker-Shing, Mr. Lee Poh Wah & Mr. Hunn Wai

The “Hack Care” catalogue is a collection of ideas that suggest ways to improvise and expand care for persons with dementia in the home environment. It aims to inspire and empower families and care givers to come up with their own hacks to make life at home more comfortable. In short, it aims to bridge the gaps between design principles and practical, affordable application.

This social initiative is led by the Lien Foundation together with collaborators from different backgrounds, including architects, product designers and healthcare consultants. This conversation gives insights to behind the scenes processes, including the formulation of the collaborative team, working dynamics, scoping, financing and eventual production of the book. The project has gained international interest and attention from architects, designers and health care workers alike.

Speakers

Ar Ong Ker-Shing, Lekker Architects Pte Ltd
Director, Lekker
Ong Ker-Shing is an architect, entrepreneur, and educator. At NUS DOA, she teaches design as an Associate Professor in Practice and is the Programme Director for the undergraduate BA Architecture programme. She is also the Creative Director of Rocket Eyewear whilst managing her day job running Lekker Architects. For her work as an architect, she was selected as one of URA’s 20 under 45 (Third Edition) in 2017.
Lekker is a group of designers and architects who are fascinated by the power of space to engage us, to create formative moments, and to provide a stage for public life. They relish moments where space enables us to learn and captures our imaginations. Their interest lies in projects with big ambitions from buildings that promote inclusion, neighbourhoods that encourage walking and socializing, to dreamlike retail experiences that are exciting and transformative. Together with critical questioning, careful observation and having fun with design, Lekker aims to bring fresh new perspectives into their projects. Lekker was awarded the prestigious President’s Design Award for Design of the Year in 2015 for the design of their innovative work for The Caterpillar’s Cove childcare centre, and a SIA Architectural Design Award in 2020 for The Quiet Room, the first of its kind inclusive sensory space at the National Museum Singapore.

Mr Lee Poh Wah, Lien Foundation
CEO, Lien Foundation
Radicalised during formative careers in the private and public sectors, Poh Wah is the CEO of Lien Foundation where he developed the grant-making approach of Radical Philanthropy. Prioritising risk-taking and relationships with partners over theories of change and KPIs, the Foundation is recognized as a first-mover driving improvements in early childhood development and eldercare. Over the years, some of the Foundation’s projects were mainstreamed while others failed spectacularly, providing humus for future shoots and lessons in fool-lanthropy. Poh Wah believes in enlisting the unquiet intellect of designers, scientists, technologists and artists to create new solutions for the social sector.

Mr Hunn Wai, L+W
Director, L+W
Hunn Wai is Director of Metarchitecture + Industrial Design at Lanzavecchia + Wai.

L+W is an internationally renowned award-winning design studio based between Italy & Singapore.

Their genesis NFT "Living Vase 01" for the Vogue NFT Collection was successfully sold out on OpenSea in November 2021. L+W also pledged an Edition of 5 NFTs “A Flower of Hope for the Refugees” for UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) Charity Auction, of which UNHCR Goodwill Ambassadors Neil Gaiman (“Sandman”) & Khaled Hosseini (“The Kite Runner”) have also pledged NFT works towards.

L+W's work spans from research projects for Herman Miller, to limited editions to mass products for brands like Zanotta, FIAM, Living Divani & Cappellini, to special commissions for Hermès & La Triennale di Milano. And now large scale Metaverse + NFT projects for international clients & partners.

In September 2022, the practice was appointed Founding Metaverse Architects for BryteWorld, a Web3 media & communications platform.
