Synopsis
The presentation will discuss bioclimatic design in the context of ecological design, and shall be illustrated by built and design examples. Bioclimatic design is referred as designing (architecture and masterplans) influenced by the climate of its locality to achieve comfort conditions for humans (for both internal conditions in architecture and external conditions in masterplans), that are improved conditions over external climate by optimising the ambient energies of the locality without the use or with minimised use of energy from non-renewable sources.
Bioclimatic design is not ecological design but a subset. Ecological design can start with bioclimatic design in the context of NZCD (Near Zero Carbon Design) before applying ecocentric, technocentric and peoplecentric design considerations. Ecological design considerations include Net Zero Emissions and Waste Design (NZE&WD), Net Zero Water Design (NZWD)), Next Positive Ecological Ecological Design (NPED), Net Optimised Happiness Design (NOHD).
NZCD starts with optimising bioclimatic design solutions as passive-mode design (no M&E systems), followed by optimising mixed-mode solutions (partial M&E systems), then applying productive mode solutions (use of renewable energy sources) and where inevitable conventional systems (full l-mode M&E systems) that need to be high-efficient systems, low embodied carbon content,, operations with smart management systems. Bioclimatic design is applicable for all climates, but the design solution vary depending on the locality’s climatic zone, its seasonal variations and physical context (eg. topography and elevation above sea-level, whether coastal location, etc.),
