Theme #3 (02 Mar): The Last Resort – Architecture of Respite

Project 1: Sukasantai Farmstay

The Sukasantai Farmstay project demonstrates and celebrates an authentic simplicity and honesty throughout the design process that the Jury appreciates. From its site planning to its architectural expression of lightly treading on site and construction methods, the team of architects are committed to building sustainably with appropriate use of local materials and simple construction details. The jury commends the homestay as a good example of site and contextual response where the architecture has regarded its natural setting with care and sensitivity. The architects have also demonstrated how architecture can contribute to an understanding of our food source and encourage intangible connections between people, demonstrating care for end users through their mindful design, they have empowered and extended the agency of architecture.

Speaker: Goy Zhenru, Goy Architects

Goy Architects, founded in Singapore by Goy Zhenru in 2015, is a group of Southeast Asian architects and designers fascinated by the regional textures and crafts. The regional team spans three nations – Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand, allowing them to tackle regional projects seamlessly while exploring and experimenting with unique materiality in Southeast Asia.

Project 2: Aman Kyoto

Aman Kyoto was designed on existing clearings and platforms in a beautiful mature garden in the mountains outside of Kyoto, allowing these to determine the placement of buildings in landscape. In so doing, the architects have demonstrated, from beginning to end, a sensitivity towards nature and local culture. The architecture is visually simple, reduced to bare essentials so that nature and landscape takes center stage. An exercise of design restraint, materials and proportions of the pavilions make strong reference to Traditional Japanese Architecture while keeping its contemporary language. The project has taken 25 years from the discovery of the garden, to its completion in 2019. The Jury recognizes that Aman Kyoto is truly an exercise in design rigour, patience and dogged determination to achieve qualities of beauty, exactitude and craft and materiality in architecture.

Aman Kyoto interiors are developed in tandem with the architecture and in so doing, embodies a cohesive sophistication inside and out, that is subtly modern while remaining reverential to cultural references. There is good balance between communal areas where dark stained timber interiors exude luxury, and suites, which are, in contrast, light-filled, highly crafted spaces that open into garden views. The interiors are decidedly more expressive and detailed compared to the architecture where curved light wood tables, chairs and washi lanterns offer interesting counterpoints. Aman Kyoto interiors is a nod to Japanese design, without resorting to imitation.

Justin Hill is a Director of Kerry Hill Architects in Singapore, which has been his home for 40 years. He is also a Director of the practice’s Perth, Western Australia studio. He has worked on many of the practice’s international resort hotel, theatre and residential projects, as well as on many of the practice’s buildings in Singapore.

Project 3: The Great Madras

The Great Madras is a good example of adaptive reuse of a conserved building. The Jury appreciates that the quality of the conserved building is not lost, but rather sensitively kept and that the new and old touches worked in tandem to preserve a cohesive experience that is reminiscent of its time. The project demonstrates the value-add of integrated design where interiors, signage, artwork and branding are conceived as a unified whole. In keeping with its intimate scale and through the emphasis of inherent architectural features through design, the architectural space and form is celebrated and synergized with a newly inserted hospitality programs. The architects have demonstrated skillful sensitivity to context, building and use for its inhabitants, as well as for architectural heritage.

Project 4: Restoration and Refurbishment of the Raffles Hotel

The Jury recognizes that in restoration and refurbishment work, much of the good efforts are painstaking and often hidden. The restoration of Raffles Hotel sees the paring back of different stages of additional work done over the years and returns the architecture to its original glory while re-interpreting and executing modern day amenities such as concealed air-conditioning. For its sensitive structural restoration, detailing for repair and incisive execution, the Jury congratulates the designers for having done well in the preservation of our national icon.
