Project 1: Pascoe Vale Community Centre

For the all-rounded consideration of site, function, users, and most importantly, for its an unwavering commitment to engage with the neighbours and community, the architects for Pascoe Community Center exemplify the architect as an activist in the community, championing for the social ideals that they believe in. The Jury appreciates the thorough consideration of spaces that cater to the different user groups. From the safe zone for children play activated by vibrant colours, to sensitively catering to the adults in the building’s connection to park space and fitting nicely into the ground, equal participation of the designer and the users to realize the project is witnessed on many differ

Speaker: Ko Shiou Hee and David Lee, K2LD Architects

Shiou Hee is one of K2LD’s founding directors, oversees the firm’s portfolio across Southeast Asia and China. “Beyond providing shelter, architecture is an expression of our understanding of the world, of cosmology and of our built environment. My design philosophy embraces what I call the sense and sensibility of architecture. The sense of architecture combines time, light and materials into spatial freedoms that are beautiful in their myriad articulation. The sensibility of architecture is an enhanced appreciation for the natural beauty of materials that is brought out by design and construction.

David, one of K2LD’s founding directors is a registered architect in Melbourne and Singapore with experience in a wide range of typologies across Australia, South East Asia and China.
“My interest in architecture lies in being honest with the site and context. The land speaks to us all and has an innate ability to seek a natural diagram. Through a design narrative, every project presents an opportunity to tell a its own story.”

Project 2: SMU Connexion

From the bold plan to deploy part of the building in an accelerated construction over a key road in 5 days, to designing an integrated mechanical system, to the use of Mass Engineered Timber in construction, the architects have masterfully considered and persevered in their pursuit to deliver a memorable and innovative learning space. The Jury commends the architects and client for their courage and spirit of innovation in in the design and delivery this project.

Project 3: Expo Interchange

The jurors commend the team for their perseverance towards design excellence in an infrastructural project that is often technically restrictive and demanding. At the Interchange, there are clear and coherent design strategies to bring together various interfacing entrances and exits, in a way that makes navigation legible and effective. At each entrance, there are contextual responses that are executed with refined detailing. Coupled with the creative use of colours, subdued textures and artwork, this station design is exemplary in an elegant resolution of architecture.

The jury commended the designers’ efforts for going beyond the call of the Client’s brief for an exhibition design, by contributing additional layers of content and meaning integrated within the architecture of pavilion. The use of a simple element; a 3-dimensional steel lattice replicated into an expansive grid is differentiated through its multiple applications for different moments to complement the content. The result is an exhibition design that carried depth, incorporating Art into Architecture and binding the two as one, in this skillful display.
