Synopsis
The webinars will feature the sharing of the design philosophies and concept by the winning designs of the 19th SIA Architectural Design Awards 2020.
Theme #1 (16 Feb): Rumah – The New Singapore House
Project 1: Custom Shades
The Jury commends the architects for their ability to work creatively and flexibly with concrete as a building material to achieve a spectrum of experiences for a residence. Different expressions are designed for three facades with concrete, which function to filter natural daylight, direct views, as well as to buffer noise and provide privacy. The design casts concrete as a versatile material, that with rigourous design consistency, is able to unify different facades while performing various functions, creating liveable and intimate spaces for the users. For the virtuosity in handling construction and celebrating natural daylight and abundant ventilation, and for lending a strong, dignified presence in the neighbourhood, the project is commended as a carefully curated treasure trove of visual treats.
Speaker: Ar Han Loke Kwang, HYLA Architects
HYLA Architects is an award-winning architectural practice headed and founded by Principal Architect Han Loke Kwang. HYLA’s work seeks to be timeless, unique and personal. HYLA’s experience lies strongly in designing high end landed residential projects. Their design belief has won the firm numerous awards including the Singapore Institute of Architect’s Design Award and Architectural Heritage Awards by URA.
Project 2: House of Spice
The Jury sees the House of Spice as a delightful residence; personal, bespoke and in its own unique way, that pays homage to Post-Modern Architecture. The project is filled with architectural references that are composed with virtuosity, eliciting cheerfulness and fun in the spaces while inspiring a reflection on architectural ideas and moments in the references. Crafted with wit and innovative consistency, visual and spatial interest unfolds at different moments. The house reveals much care in execution and the strong personality of the owner, with powerful yet light-hearted spaces that are integral to the family’s living.
Speaker: Ar Rene Tan, RT+Q Architects
Born in Malaysia, Rene Tan – now resides and practices architecture in Singapore.
Rene holds a BA both in architecture and music at Yale and his MArch from Princeton. He is a Director at RT+Q Architects (a firm he co-founded in 2003 with partner TK Quek).
Rene leads a team of about fifteen in their search for the ‘next best project’.
The firm have been conferred awards in Singapore and abroad. Rene was ‘Designer of the Year’ laureate of the 2016 President’s Design Awards, Singapore–an honour he shares with everyone at RT+Q. Rene was in Adjunct Associate Professor in 2017 at the National University of Singapore and in 2018-19 at the Singapore University of Technology & Design where he taught the ‘Palladio Studio’ and currently the ‘Brunelleschi Studio’.
Project 3: The Sensible House
Sensible House is a multi-generational house with a strong commitment to natural cross ventilation, both by the owners and the architect, in their concerted effort towards climatic sensitivity. This commitment has led to a clear strategy of porosity and connection between the different levels within the house, most notably by detaching key bedrooms from the party walls resulting in delightful in-between spaces and unexpected double volume areas. These unique spatial arrangements lend themselves to a positively-surprising journey of spatial complexities and scale shifts throughout the house that is nonetheless achieved with a simple, modest material palette and a conviction to climatic responsiveness.
Speaker: Ar Chaw Chih Wen, Hyphen Architects
Hyphen is a Singapore based design practice, interested in surveying the post human world through the contemplation of spatial practices, art, technology, history and critical theory. We often operate at the crossroads of many disciplines, dreaming up new realities guided by a dose of cynical optimism.
At the helm of Hyphen is Chih Wen, whose previous working experiences in New York City, Shanghai and Singapore have seen him amassed a portfolio of works in various scales and typologies. He is currently a part-time faculty at the Department of Architecture in NUS and a part-time lecturer at La Salle School of the Arts (Interior Design).
